Factors Affecting Nitrate Distribution in Shallow 10 Groundwater under a Beef Farm in South Eastern Ireland

چکیده
22 Groundwater contamination was characterised using a methodology which combines 23 shallow groundwater geochemistry data from 17 piezometers over a 2 yr period in a 24 statistical framework and hydrogeological techniques. Nitrate-N (NO3-N) 25 contaminant mass flux was calculated across three control planes (rows of 26 piezometers) in six isolated plots. Results showed natural attenuation occurs on site 27 although the method does not directly differentiate between dilution and 28 denitrification. It was further investigated whether NO3-N concentration in shallow 29 groundwater (<5 m below ground level) generated from an agricultural point source 30 on a 4.2 ha site on a beef farm in SE Ireland could be predicted from saturated 31 hydraulic conductivity (Ksat) measurements, ground elevation (m Above Ordnance 32 Datum), elevation of groundwater sampling (screen opening interval) (m AOD) and 33 distance from a dirty water point pollution source. Tobit regression, using a 34 background concentration threshold of 2.6 mg NO3-N L -1 showed, when assessed 35 individually in a step wise procedure, Ksat was significantly related to groundwater 36

متن کاملNon-fatal farm injuries on 117 eastern Ontario beef and dairy farms: a one-year study.
A one-year prospective survey was conducted to study the incidence of and potential risk factors for farm-related injuries in Eastern Ontario. One hundred and seventeen dairy and beef farms were surveyed using a personal interview. Information was collected on demographic characteristics of the farm owners, workers, and families; characteristics of the farm operations; and information on behavi...
متن کاملSuckler beef systems – assessing steps to improve profitability
Introduction Ireland is the fifth largest net exporter of beef in the world, exporting 90% of the total 520,000 tonnes of carcass weight produced in 2014, valued at just under €2.1 billion. A further 210,000 cattle, worth €162 m, were exported live. Beef production is the most ubiquitous farm enterprise activity in Ireland with the beef sector one of the main contributors to the Irish agri-food...
متن کاملPredicting geogenic arsenic contamination in shallow groundwater of south Louisiana, United States.
Groundwater contaminated with arsenic (As) threatens the health of more than 140 million people worldwide. Previous studies indicate that geology and sedimentary depositional environments are important factors controlling groundwater As contamination. The Mississippi River delta has broadly similar geology and sedimentary depositional environments to the large deltas in South and Southeast Asia...
